Charles Hindenlang
Charles Hindenlang (born October 1, 1894 in Basel ; † April 30, 1960 there ; also Karl Hindenlang ) was a Swiss painter and glass painter .
biography
After finishing school, Charles Hindenlang began an apprenticeship in a freight forwarding company, which he broke off in 1911 to do an apprenticeship as a decorative painter with Karl Schneider. In 1914 he attended the Basel trade school and made friends with Fritz Baumann , Jakob Mummenthaler and Paul Wilde.
Hindelang belonged to the generation of Basel dark-tone artists. This group of artists, known as “Basel's classic generation of painters”, was a revolutionary discovery for those interested in art in Basel. The group achieved their breakthrough in 1907 with a joint exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel . The artists fostered a friendly exchange with the Basel artist group Das neue Leben, founded in 1918, and had a decisive influence on the development of Basel painting after the turn of the century and into the 1920s.
Hindelang was a member of the Basel GSMBA and a founding member of the « Rot-Blau » artist group . Later he was a member of the anti-fascist Basel " Gruppe 33 " and in the early 1930s came out openly against National Socialism . His artist friend Louis Léon Weber created a bust of Hindenlang . Hindelang went on study trips to Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece and the Balkans.
In 1940, the municipality of Riehen received the large-format glass painting Wettstein and the Citizens of Riehen, designed by Hindenlang, from the Federal Art Commission . When Hindenlang's second version of the Basel Dance of Death was completed in 1943, a large Dance of Death ballet took place on Basel's Münsterplatz under the direction of the dancer and choreographer Marietta von Meyenburg , for which Hindenlang provided the costumes, the composer Frank Martin the music and the painters and sculptors Walter Bodmer and the architect Ernst Egeler contributed to the construction of the stage. Hindelang was a master of appropriation art . Some of his works emerged from the competitions of the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt .
In 1954 Hindelang created the mural “The Four Seasons” in the dining room of the “Basler Heilstätte” in Davos. In 1958 he created the stained glass windows for the St. Thomas Church in Basel. They were made by Aubert & Pitteloud Verriers in Lausanne.
The Kunsthalle Basel dedicated an exhibition to him in 1965 together with Karl Dick and Otto Staiger .
