Maurice Utrillo
Maurice Utrillo (born December 26, 1883 in Paris , † November 5, 1955 in Dax ) was a French painter and the son of Suzanne Valadon .
Life
Maurice Utrillo was born in Paris on December 26, 1883, the son of the Parisian painter Suzanne Valadon. It is unclear who his father was. Although he lived with his mother for a long time as a child, he took the name of his adoptive father , the art critic Miquel Utrillo . Maurice Utrillo was already alcoholic as a teenager and, as a 17-year-old, went on a cure in Sainte Anne in 1900. After that, his mother asked him to paint and was immediately successful. In 1935 Maurice Utrillo married the widow of the art collector Pauwels Lucie Pauwels , who also painted under the pseudonym Lucie Valore .
Utrillo died on November 5, 1955 at the age of 71 in Dax during a spa stay and is buried in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent cemetery in Paris on Montmartre .

Art historians divide his works into several periods:
- impressionist period (1900 to around 1903). The paintings of this time are often dark and gloomy.
- Montmagny period (around 1904 to 1906). In this northern suburb of Paris, he mainly painted street scenes. Gradually the paintings lightened.
- white period (1906-1914). To achieve more brightness, Maurice Utrillo mixed his colors with light sand and plaster . Light pink and milky white now dominate his pictures.
- colored painting (from 1915). With this he had found his style that would last until his death.
Around 1920 his painting found general recognition and in 1929 he was awarded the French Legion of Honor by the state . On December 5, 1983, the French Post issued a special stamp for 4 francs. The painting on the special stamp for Utrillo's 100th birthday shows the Le Lapin Agile wine tavern on Montmartre. Recently, Utrillo's works reached near $ 1 million in auction .
Utrillo-Valadon Museum
The Musée Utrillo-Valadon, opened in 1995, is located in Sannois and is the only museum dedicated to Maurice Utrillo. The house, the Villa Rozée, a town house from the 18th century, shows besides his works personal objects like his pallets and a piano. It also exhibits work by his mother, Suzanne Valadon.
