Art and artist

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German magazine Kunst und Künstler: illustrated monthly for fine arts and applied arts was a periodical - described by many as the most beautiful art magazine - that shaped art reception in Germany during the first third of the 20th century, even during the imperial era and the Weimar Republic .

history

Founded as the best-known publishing product by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin- Tiergarten, the monthly soon became the most influential publication for the art-loving public. It was published from year 1 (1902/03) to year 32 (1933) under the editorship initially by Emil Heilbut and Cäsar Flaischlen in the publishing house Bruno Cassirer, Berlin. Since 1907 it has been published by the art critic and journalist Karl Scheffler , a committed advocate of contemporary European art. It is thanks to his journalistic influence, among other things, that impressionism, which was still highly controversial in Germany in the years before the First World War, was increasingly accepted by the public at the time.

In terms of content, the magazine devoted itself exclusively to the fine arts , mainly publishing reviews and reviews of works that were also printed as reproductions in the booklets. Illustrations and original graphics by participating artists such as Arnold Böcklin , Anselm Feuerbach , Max Klinger , Max Liebermann , Giovanni Segantini , Max Slevogt , Hans Thoma , Wilhelm Trübner , and Karl Walser , some of whom also appeared as authors, marked the specialty of this Periodicals. In addition, articles on art-historical, art-theoretical and art-scientific topics by well-known authors appeared continuously, the number and importance of which secured the reputation and success of this monthly and document its reputation to this day.

After the National Socialists came to power , the magazine was discontinued after the last issue appeared in January 1933.
