Frits Lugt

Frits Lugt , actually Frederik Johannes Lugt (born May 4, 1884 in Amsterdam , † July 15, 1970 in Paris ) was a Dutch art historian and art collector .
Life
Lugt worked for the Amsterdam art auction house Frederik Muller from 1901 to 1915. In 1910 he married Jacoba Klever (1888–1969), with whom he lived in Maartensdijk in the province of Utrecht and had five children. In the 1920s he was commissioned to catalog the drawings and prints in Paris' museums and libraries. Jacoba Lugt inherited a considerable inheritance in 1935, which made it possible for both of them to also act as art collectors. Because of their Mennonite beliefs , after the German occupation of the Netherlands, they had to flee via Switzerland to the USA, where he was able to work at Oberlin College . The part of their collection that remained in the Netherlands was stolen by the Mühlmann office . After the war they settled in Paris, founded the “Fondation Custodia” in 1947 and helped to found the “Institut Néerlandais” in Paris in 1957.
His main work Les Marques des Collections des Dessins et d'Estampes has been revised and supplemented several times since 1921 and is the standard work on notices of ownership for artistic prints and works on paper . The “Frits Lugt Collection” at the Hôtel Turgot in Paris is a research facility with a large collection of drawings (7,000), prints (30,000), paintings (220), artist letters (40,000) and books.
