Otto Höver

Otto Adolf Höver (born December 14, 1889 in Bremerhaven ; † June 15, 1963 there ) was a German art historian, writer and city librarian in Bremerhaven. He was best known for his publications on shipping.

Life

Höver attended the humanistic grammar school in Geestemünde , which later became the Wilhelm Raabe School . After graduating from high school, he studied art history , archeology and ethnology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich from 1909 to 1920 . During the First World War he had to interrupt his studies and serve as a soldier. He suffered a severe wound in his left leg. In 1920 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . He was scientifically active in Hagen , Berlin , Kiel and Kassel . From 1929 to 1932 Höver was a freelance writer in Bremen . It was here that he wrote his most important book From the Galiot to the Five-Master, Our Sailing Ships in World Shipping . From 1932 to 1945 he headed the city library in Bremerhaven. In 1935, in a letter to Lord Mayor Walter Delius , he suggested building a shipping museum in Wesermünde . He was important as the author of works on the history of seafaring and shipyards . As a private scholar , he made numerous trips abroad.
