Walter Delius (born March 1, 1884 in Siegen , † December 18, 1945 in Bremen ) was a German administrative lawyer , politician and Lord Mayor of Wesermünde .

biography

Delius, son of Anton Delius , who was mayor of Siegen from 1881 to 1919, studied law at the University of Tübingen and at the University of Münster from 1903 to 1906 . After passing the state exam and subsequent clerkship doctorate he in 1910 at the University of Bonn to Dr. iur. As an assessor he worked in Gniezno until 1912 .

From 1912 to 1917 he worked as the city syndic and city councilor in Bremerhaven , since 1914 with the title of deputy city director . On November 1, 1917, he was elected mayor of Geestemünde , since 1919 with the title of mayor. He promoted deep-sea fishing here .

In the 1920s he was a member of the national liberal German People's Party DVP . The city of Wesermünde was formed in 1924 in the Prussian province of Hanover through the merger of the cities of Lehe and Geestemünde. 1925 Delius ran for the DVP unsuccessfully for the office of Lord Mayor of Hanover . Delius was the first mayor of Wesermünde from 1924 to 1945. During this time the fishing port was expanded. From 1921 to 1932 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Hanover .

In 1933 Delius remained in his office. He became a member of the NSDAP in 1937 . From 1936 Delius succeeded in implementing his plans to unify Wesermünde and Bremerhaven with Hermann Göring and the National Socialists . On November 1, 1939, on the approval of Delius, the city ​​of Bremerhaven , which belonged to Bremen - but without the port area - was incorporated into the Prussian Wesermünde. Delius remained Lord Mayor of the enlarged Wesermünde, his representative and mayor was Wilhelm Richter.

During the Second World War he also acted from 1939 to 1940 as acting mayor of Königshütte in Upper Silesia and then as city commissioner at the German military administration in Antwerp . From 1942 to 1945 he was again fully active as Lord Mayor in Wesermünde. In 1945 he died in Allied custody in Bremen.
