Gerhard van Heukelum (born January 15, 1890 on Nordstrand ; † May 5, 1969 in Debstedt ) was a German politician ( SPD ), Lord Mayor of Bremerhaven and Senator in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Life

Heukelum was the son of a cattle and grain dealer on the island of Nordstrand. After attending primary school, he completed training as a riveter . After the years of traveling he worked in a metalworking company in Bremerhaven. Active in the trade union, he joined the German Metalworkers' Association (DMV) in 1908 . From 1920 to 1924 he was managing director of the Bremerhaven DMV association. Member of the SPD since 1910, he was elected to the City Council of Bremerhaven in 1919 and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in 1928. From 1924 he was editor of the social democratic newspaper Norddeutsche Volksstimme and in 1927 became editor-in-chief of the paper. From 1922 to 1925 he was an honorary councilor in the Bremerhaven magistrate. From 1927 to 1933 he belonged to the Bremen citizenship . During the Nazi era he had to give up his journalistic activity. He was arrested several times. In the following years he worked as a sales representative, worker and accountant.

post war period

From 1946 to February 11, 1947 he was a member of the Hanoverian Landtag . He was again a member of the Bremen citizenship in 1947/48 and sat on the Economic Council of the United Economic Area from February to June 1948 . After the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht , van Heukelum was appointed mayor of the city of Bremerhaven by the US military government in May 1945. He had been honorary mayor of the city ​​of Wesermünde since July 2, 1946 , which was incorporated into the state of Bremen in February 1947 at his instigation , with the port area remaining with the city of Bremen . After the renaming of Wesermünde in Bremerhaven in 1947, he served as the city's mayor until 1948, until in a battle vote by the city ​​council Hermann Gullasch (also SPD) with the votes of those parties that did not agree with van Heukelum's approach ( CDU , FDP , DP and the KPD ), prevailed as Lord Mayor. On May 18, 1948, Heukelum was appointed Senator for Labor and Welfare to the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , led by Mayor Wilhelm Kaisen . From November 29, 1951 to December 21, 1959 he was Labor Senator in the state government. He then served as a voluntary city councilor for the hospital system in the Bremerhaven municipal authorities until 1967. He died at the age of 79 and was buried in the Bremerhaven cemetery in Wulsdorf .

His son was the Diplom-Kaufmann Horst van Heukelum (born November 8, 1926 in Bremerhaven, d. 18 Jan. 2019 in Kronberg im Taunus ), longtime board member of the trade union bank for social economy and from 1974 to 1979 CEO of in Frankfurt founded co op AG , a holding company.
