The lexicon was first published in 2002 and was published by the former Bremerhaven city archivist Hartmut Bickelmann with the support of Daniela Deck. The personal articles were created with the help of a total of 44 employees, especially the authors Uwe Jürgensen, Karl Heinz Windhorn and Lothar Wolf.

In 2003 the 2nd, expanded and editorially corrected edition appeared. In the 2nd edition of 2003, the biographies of people who died after the end of the report for the 1st edition (December 31, 2000) were included, as a result of which the number of people included in the lexicon rose from 426 to 456. The end of the report for the 2nd edition was autumn 2003.

Deceased personalities from the city of Bremerhaven were admitted within their current limits from all areas of life "with a significantly high proportion of approx. 20% from the field of business". The librarian Klaus Schreiber described the work in his review of the 2nd edition as the standard work for Bremerhaven, but criticized the aging-prone paper of the 1st edition.
