biography

Gullasch was the son of a railway official. After attending elementary school, he completed an administration apprenticeship in Lübbenau and was an administrative assistant at the municipal authorities of the city of Lübbenau until 1922 . He attended the Administrative School in Berlin and the Administrative Academy in Hamburg. In 1933 he passed the diploma examination as a municipal civil servant. In the 1920s he got involved with the SPD and the union . In 1933 he was therefore dismissed from civil service by the National Socialists . Until 1939 he worked for a wholesaler and a life insurance company. From 1939 to 1945 he was a soldier in World War II and a prisoner of war until August 1945 . After that he was given the management of the tax office in Hamburg .

In June 1946 he was appointed senior city director of Wesermünde . When he was elected Lord Mayor of Bremerhaven by the city council in 1948, he prevailed as a Social Democrat with the votes of the CDU , FDP , DP and KPD against the previous Lord Mayor Gerhard van Heukelum (SPD). Van Heukelum had renamed the city of Wesermünde in Bremerhaven and incorporated the city into the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , with the port area remaining with the city of Bremen ; this policy was not endorsed by the parties that supported Gullasch. Gullasch's relationship with his SPD was heavily burdened by this.

In his time u. a. the Weserbad and the Bremerhaven City Theater opened, the settlements Am Bürgerpark in Geestemünde , Auf dem Eckernfeld in Lehe , Brillemoor and Grünhöfe in Geestemünde built, the first Columbusbahnhof passenger facility built on Columbuskaje and the fishing port expanded. In 1954 he had problems with the CDU, DP and FDP when it came to the seizure of land ( Blink affair ) for American building projects. At the same time, the conflicts with the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen widened, which excluded him from its meetings. The SPD prepared a motion of no confidence against him. On March 3, 1957, Gullasch resigned as mayor before the decision. Bodo Selge (SPD) was elected his successor in February 1958 .
