Felix Michael Julius Poppenberg (born October 13, 1869 in Charlottenburg , † August 27, 1915 in Berlin ) was a German writer .

Live and act

Felix Poppenberg was born out of wedlock and grew up with his mother, a singer, in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse 207. He attended the Friedrichswerder high school , where he passed the Abitur examination on September 23, 1889.

Poppenberg studied German at the University of Berlin , where he was awarded a doctorate by Erich Schmidt in 1893. phil. PhD . He then lived as a writer and essayist in Charlottenburg.

During his studies he wrote columnist articles for the magazine for foreign literature and the world of novels published by Cotta through the mediation of Paul Schlenther and Otto Neumann-Hofer . His first publication was a tribute to Hermann Allmers on his 70th birthday.

Poppenberg published regularly in the Neue Rundschau , in the literary echo , but also in many daily newspapers inside and outside the capital. In addition to book reviews and theater reviews, for example of the world premiere of Don Karlos at the Deutsches Theater by Max Reinhardt, with the actor Bassermann as King Philipp, he dealt with various cultural-historical topics as well as with the then current fashion .

In 1906 he tried to prove that Karl Gustav Vollmoeller had plagiarized the novella La fausse maîtresse von Balzac for his play Der Deutsche Graf .

Despite limited resources, he cultivated the lifestyle of a dandy in literary Berlin at the end of the 19th century . In admiration for Hermann von Pückler-Muskau , to whom he dedicated a highly acclaimed essay in 1904, he decorated his study with a portrait of the prince.

Annual trips, about which he also reported, took him to almost all European countries as well as to Algeria , Constantinople and, most recently, to Egypt in 1913 , where he contracted dysentery .

He completed several unsuccessful courses, most recently from June to August 1915 in Wiesbaden . His last entry in his diary was: “Ultima stagione †††. Moriturus. Steepest step. ”In 1915, on the eve of Goethe's 166th birthday , he shot himself in the heart. He found his final resting place in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf .
