Ernst Heilborn

Ernst Friedrich Heilborn (born June 10, 1867 in Berlin ; † May 16, 1942 ) was a German writer , critic and publicist .

life and work

After graduating from the French grammar school in Berlin, Heilborn studied philosophy, history and German at the universities in Jena and Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1890 with the work The vocabulary of the so-called first Silesian school of poets represented in word formation and word composition (sic!).

His journalistic activity began in the 1890s. He was the editor of several newspapers and magazines and from 1911 to 1933 editor of the literary echo (since 1923 Die Literatur ). From 1901 he reported on Berlin theater life for the Frankfurter Zeitung .

As a book author, he wrote cultural and literary histories and biographies, as well as several novels. From 1933 his journalistic activities were restricted due to his Jewish origin, in November 1936 a writing ban was imposed on him. In 1937 he traveled to Palestine, but returned to Germany. In 1942 he was refused to leave the country again and he and his wife were arrested while trying to escape. Heilborn died in prison.
