Max von Boehn (cultural historian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Ulrich von Boehn (born February 5, 1860 in Potsdam , † May 17, 1932 in Berlin ) was a German writer. He mainly wrote works of cultural history, including the standard work on costume history, Die Mode .

origin

He comes from the Pomeranian noble family Boehn and there from the line Besow-Grumbkow . His parents were Lieutenant Colonel Hubert Oskar Friedrich von Boehn (born January 24, 1825) and his wife Susanne Jakobine Johanna von Arnim (born March 28, 1831 - † October 7, 1891).

life and work

He attended a Prussian cadet school from 1870 to 1878 . However, he renounced a military career and formed self-taught on study tours continued. He then lived in Munich and later in Berlin as a private scholar and freelance writer. The professional world only paid tribute to the autodidact after he had long since found a response from the audience.

At first, Boehn stylized his encounters with art into cultic approaches to ingenious masterpieces in monographic representations such as Spanish travel pictures (1904), Giorgione and Palma Vecchio (1908) and Lorenzo Bernini (1912), writes Volker Busch. In contrast, the “free-thinking aristocrat” with his subsequent cultural-historical works based on detailed source studies designed entertaining “multi-faceted moral images”. Boehn achieved the strongest effect that continues to this day with his fashion history, which appeared in eight volumes between 1907 and 1925. Naturally, Boehn's focus is almost exclusively on the ruling classes. However, he embeds his portrayal in the respective political and economic contexts, which leave little to be desired from a critical point of view, i.e. also do not spare Boehn's own class. His style is brief, apt, snappy and not without a sense of humor.

Boehn was by no means an anti-Semite , as is evident from a 1929 encyclopedia entry condemning him. He valued the Mendelssohns , Heine and Lasalle , among others . At the same time, Boehn's sympathies turned to National Socialism in the course of the 1920s . Walter Benjamin was one of Boehn's critics .
