Rolf Tiedemann

Rolf Tiedemann (born September 24, 1932 in Hamburg ; † July 29, 2018 ) was a German philosopher , philologist and editor .

Life

After studying philosophy, German and sociology in Hamburg, Göttingen, Berlin and Frankfurt a. M. Tiedemann received his doctorate in 1964 under Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer with the first dissertation on Walter Benjamin . From 1959 he was a research associate and later Adorno's personal assistant at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research . From 1965 he worked in Berlin, before returning to Frankfurt in 1970, where he was the editor of the complete editions of Adorno and, together with Hermann Schweppenhäuser , of Benjamin. 1985-2002 he was director of the - of it on behalf of the Hamburg Foundation for the promotion of science and culture built - Theodor W. Adorno archive in Frankfurt. Here he initiated u. a. the editions of Adorno's posthumous writings , of which he himself edited six volumes. In particular, the volumes of the Passage Works by Benjamin and the Aesthetic Theory and Beethoven by Adorno, which he edited and which have only survived as fragments, have been widely received and translated into numerous languages.

Tiedemann was an honorary doctor from the University of Hanover . He died in July 2018 at the age of 85.
