Life

Paul Cézanne: Gustave Geffroy , 1895, Musée d'Orsay , Paris

Geffroy came to Paris from the Breton island of Belle-Île in September 1886 to conduct an investigation into Napoléon III's prisons . close. There he happened to meet the painter Claude Monet , whom he admired and with whom he became friends.

He was one of the few critics who gave Paul Cézanne's work a positive assessment during his lifetime. The portrait of Geffroys painted by Cézanne was created in 1895, but Cézanne left it unfinished because he was not satisfied with it.

In 1897 Geffroy published L'Enfermé , in which he reported on the life of the French revolutionary Auguste Blanqui . As an employee of the newspaper La Justice , from January 15, 1880, he met Georges Clemenceau , who became a good friend to him and who made him director of the tapestry manufacture in 1908 . He held this office until his death.

A street in the 13th arrondissement in Paris bears his name.
