Hermann Schlittgen (born June 23, 1859 in Roitzsch , † June 8, 1930 in Wasserburg am Inn ) was a German painter .

Life

Schlittgen's parents died of cholera in 1866 and he grew up with his uncle. His teacher Wilhelm Viole recognized Schlittgen's artistic talent early on and encouraged him. As a 14-year-old Schlittgen began studying at the Royal Art Academy in Leipzig , where he received support from the Association for the Support of Unprofitable Talented Boys . After completing his studies in 1876, Schlittgen found a job with the director of the Leipzig Academy, Ludwig Nieper , as his factotum . Working as an illustrator for various publications earned him little income and Schlittgen went into debt. He fell out with his uncle and after a short stay in Berlin and further studies at the art school in Weimar with Theodor Hagen, he came to Munich. There he illustrated the flying leaves . Here he also made the acquaintance of Stefan George , who held him in high regard and whom he portrayed.

After staying in Flanders in October 1884, he went to Paris and became a student at Jules-Joseph Lefebvre's private Académie Julian . In the following years Schmittgen commuted constantly between Flanders, Paris, Munich and Berlin. In 1886 his son "Muckel" was born in Paris. He first appeared as a painter at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 and was awarded a prize for his painting Die Glasbläser von Kramsach .

In 1890 Schlittgen returned to Munich and took up his permanent residence there. During several trips to Berlin he made the acquaintance of Edvard Munch, which shaped him very much. He also got to know Gerhart Hauptmann and August Strindberg. In 1892 he was a co-founder of the Munich Secession . Schlittgen suffered from an eye ailment for many years and was unable to pursue his work, so from 1893 to 1900 he went on various trips across Europe. At the third annual exhibition of the German Association of Artists in the Grand Ducal Museum in Weimar, Schlittgen received the Villa Romana Prize in 1906 for a portrait of his son . Schlittgen spent a year as a scholarship holder and new member of the DKB in the classicist villa on the outskirts of Florence, acquired in 1905 by the Leipzig painter Max Klinger with private funds from among his artist friends, where he was able to work in seclusion with his family.

In 1918, at the age of 61, Schlittgen moved to Wasserburg am Inn . Entirely dedicated to painting, he spent many years in this city and contributed to the art-historical image. Schlittgen died on June 8, 1930 and left behind a work of drawings and paintings in Wasserburg. In 1937 a special exhibition took place in the Bitterfeld Museum, in which not only some works by Hermann Schlittgen were shown, but also a place for his works was given to his early teacher and sponsor Wilhelm Viole.
