Ludwig Burchard (born May 31, 1886 in Mainz , † September 7, 1960 in London ) was a German art historian and Rubens researcher.

Life

After graduating from the Grand Ducal Gymnasium in Karlsruhe, Burchard studied in Heidelberg (1904–1907) and Halle (1907–1911) with Adolph Goldschmidt , from whom he received his doctorate in 1911 with the dissertation " The Dutch etchers before Rembrandt ". During the First World War he worked from 1917 at the salvage facility for works of art in the governorate of Metz . In 1919 he married Lily Stange and was editor of the Thieme-Becker artist lexicon until 1920 . From 1920 to 1922 he acted as editor of the "Zeitschrift für bildende Kunst" .

In 1935 he emigrated with his family to England because of the anti-Semitic policies of the National Socialists, where he was interned for a short time in 1940 and naturalized in 1948 . For more than 40 years he dealt with the preparatory work for the Corpus Rubenianum , which was published posthumously from 1968 to 1982 by the Nationaal Centrum voor de Plastische Kunsten in Brussels.
