Anton Mayer was the son of bank director Georg Anton Mayer (1846–1927). After initial private lessons, he went to the Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin in 1888 . He graduated from high school in Speyer in 1899. In September 1899 he entered the 2nd Royal Saxon Hussar Regiment No. 19 in Grimma as a flag junior , attended the war school in Danzig and in January 1901 became a lieutenant in this regiment. In 1903 he left the service and became an officer in the reserve. During his time in the military he met Rudolf G. Binding (1867–1938), with whom he remained lifelong friends. In the winter semester of 1903/04 he began studying art history at the University of Berlin . In 1907 he received his doctorate under Adolph Goldschmidt at the University of Halle . After that he was part of the internship at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.

From 1913 to the end of May 1915 he was director of the Grand Ducal Museum for Art and Applied Arts in Weimar . He then worked as an art and music critic in Berlin, for example for the 8 o'clock evening newspaper (National-Zeitung) . He lived on the former manor in Berlin-Weißensee . In the course of inflation he became impoverished and was dependent on his income as an author. From 1921 to 1925 he was editor and editor of the first three volumes of the magazine Faust with Paul Landau . A monthly for art, literature and music . Since 1926 he worked as a freelance writer.

He published many of his works under the pseudonym Johannes Reinwaldt, some of his works appeared under both names. He wrote non-fiction books and novels in great numbers. He also translated books from English and French.

In the time of National Socialism he was considered a " second degree Jewish hybrid ". In 1937 he was a member of the Reichsschrifttumskammer with a special permit ; publications can be verified until 1942. Mayer moved to the cheaper Kleinmachnow near Berlin (Kurmärkischestraße 60, today: Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße). He died in December 1944 in the Neuengamme concentration camp.

Mayer was married to the actress Lucie Höflich (1883–1956) from 1910 until the divorce in 1917 , from this marriage the daughter Ursula Höflich (* 1911) emerged, who also worked as an actress. His second marriage was to Anselma Fürst.
