Wolfgang von Oettingen

Wolfgang von Oettingen (born March 13 . Jul / 25. March  1859 greg. In Dorpat , Livonia ; † 20th December 1943 in Bonn ) was a Baltic German art and literary historian .

family

He came from an old, originally from Westphalia originating noble family and was the son of Medicine professor Georg von Oettingen (1824-1916), Rector of the University of Tartu , and his first wife Marie von Seidlitz (1832-1903). His half-brother from his father's second marriage was Superintendent Herbert von Oettingen (1878-1946).

Oettingen married Caroline Wilmanns on June 24, 1887 in Berlin (* May 28, 1858 in Berlin; † 1941 at Reichenberg Castle in Reichenberg , Rhein-Lahn-Kreis ), the daughter of the Prussian building councilor Franz Wilmanns and Josephine Eickenbusch. The couple had three children, including Karljohann von Oettingen (* 1891, † 1953), gynecologist and professor in Heidelberg .

Life

He attended from 1872 the country Pforta in Naumburg, studied from 1878 in Strasbourg German and was there in 1882 with a thesis on George Greflinger doctorate . A close friend from the time in Schulpforta was the later Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg . He then studied art history in Strasbourg and Leipzig . From 1884 to 1886 he was a volunteer at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. In 1888 he completed his habilitation at the University of Marburg with a thesis on the Italian sculptor and architect Filarete for the subject of modern art history and then taught there as a private lecturer. From 1892 to 1897 he taught as a professor of art and literary history at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1897 to 1905 he was the first permanent secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin . From 1905 to 1909 he lived as a private scholar at Reichenberg Castle near Sankt Goarshausen , which he had inherited from his aunt Charlotte Countess von Mellin in 1880 . In 1909 he became director of the Goethe National Museum in Weimar , and from 1911 he was also director of the Goethe and Schiller Archives .

In 1918 he resigned for health reasons, initially as head of the Goethe-Schiller-Archive and as a member of the executive committee of the Goethe-Gesellschaft, a short time later also as director of the Goethe National Museum. His successor in office was the Germanist Hans Wahl . He then privatized Reichenberg Castle. However, he was a member of the board of directors of the Goethe Society until 1932 and was made an honorary member when he left .
