Hermann Gehri (painter)

Hermann Gehri (born September 3, 1879 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † November 27, 1944 in the bombing raid on Freiburg im Breisgau ) was professor of figural drawing at the Grand Ducal Baden State Art School in Karlsruhe . He was a painter, lithographer, and silhouette artist .

Life

Gehri was the son of the carpenter Johann Gehri from Wildtal near Freiburg. After graduating from the Berthold Gymnasium in Freiburg in 1898 , he studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1899 to 1905 . He then studied at the Dresden Art Academy and later at the Karlsruhe State Art School , there with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte . In 1905 and 1906 he did military service as a " one-year volunteer " with the 113th Infantry Regiment in Freiburg. In 1907 and 1908 he went on a trip to Japan, probably with Ernst Grosse or Otto Kümmel . In 1910 he traveled to Italy , Vienna , Amsterdam , Paris and Northern Germany . From 1912 to 1914 he was a teacher at the Berlin School of Applied Arts .

From 1914 to 1916 he did auxiliary services at the Red Cross in Freiburg, from 1916 to 1919 he served as a soldier on the Eastern and Western Fronts and suffered a serious wound which was followed by a stay in a hospital.

From 1920 to 1933 he taught as a professor for figure drawing at the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe, and in 1923 he became a member of the Senate. His students included Fridel Dethleffs-Edelmann , Walter Boeckh , Hendrik Koehler and, as a private student, Wilhelm Kimmich .

On July 25, 1933, Gehri was dismissed from teaching for political reasons and now worked as a freelance artist. In the bomb attack in 1944 at Freiburg was his studio (then, Schlageterstraße 5 today Erasmusstraße) hit. Gehri died in the process, and a significant part of his oeuvre was destroyed.
