Pierre-Georges Jeanniot (born July 2, 1848 in Plainpalais , † January 9, 1934 in Paris ) was a French painter, draftsman, watercolorist, engraver and officer.

Life

Pierre Georges Jeanniot received his first painting lessons from his father, Pierre-Alexandre Jeanniot (1826-1892), the long-time director of the École des beaux-arts in Dijon .

Pierre-Georges Jeanniot, however, began his military career as an infantry officer (1866–1881) and continued to draw and paint.

He made his debut in 1872 at the Salon de Paris with a watercolor .

In 1881, when the army offered him the rank of major, he resigned from military service to devote himself exclusively to painting. Back then he created many pictures of battle scenes. In 1882 he settled in Paris.

A few years later he turned to the current issues of Parisian life, such as the Jockey Club de Paris or the Parisian beaches.

The establishment of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1899 brought new impetus. Jeanniot's friends included a. Édouard Manet , Pierre Puvis de Chavannes , Paul César Helleu and especially Edgar Degas , whom he admired as a master. He spent a lot of time with Edgar Degas in his family home in Diénay ( Côte-d'Or ).

Over the next few decades he created illustrations for the novels of well-known French writers, such as Guy de Maupassant , Alphonse Daudet , Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos , Victor Hugo , Émile Zola , Octave Mirbeau and Honoré de Balzac .

He was one of the first employees (together with Théodore de Banville , Alphonse Daudet and Giuseppe De Nittis ) of the magazine La Vie Moderne and also the magazine La Lutte Moderne . He later became director of the Journal amusant , but also made contributions to Rire and L'Echo de Paris .

His works showed a certain resemblance to the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Mary Cassatt .
