Antonin Proust (born March 15, 1832 in Niort , † March 22, 1905 in Paris ) was a French journalist and politician .

Antonin Proust grew up in Paris and attended the Collège Rollin as a pupil, where he became a classmate of Édouard Manet , who was of the same age . Together with him, he began training as a painter and visited Thomas Couture's studio . However, he later decided to become a journalist and worked for the Courrier du dimanche and Semaine universelle newspapers . In 1864 he founded the anti-monarchist newspaper La Semaine hebdomadaire in Brussels . It was during this time that his first books were written. In addition to political works, he published art history treatises and exhibition reviews.

At the beginning of the Franco-German War, Proust worked as a war correspondent for the magazine " Le temps ", but returned to Paris after the Battle of Sedan and became the personal secretary of Léon Gambetta . During the siege of Paris he briefly held the office of Minister of the Interior. In 1876 he became a member of the National Assembly for the Deux-Sèvres department , which is also where he was born.

Gambetta brought him into his cabinet as Minister of Culture in 1881, but this was dissolved the following year. During his brief tenure, he set up an institute for art history and archeology at the École du Louvre and was able to award his school friend Édouard Manet the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor . Antonin Proust was one of the organizers of the great Manet retrospective in 1884, which took place at the École des Beaux-Arts a year after his death .

In 1893, he was acquitted of allegations made against Proust in connection with the Panama scandal .

From 1897 he published a series of articles on Édouard Manet in La Revue blanche , which later appeared in book form. Proust is one of the painter's most important biographers and has been friends with him since he was at school. The portraits of Anders Zorn and Auguste Rodin also testify to his good relationships with other artists . He also had a long love affair with the Catalan dancer Rosita Mauri .

Proust shot himself in the head on March 20, 1905 and died of his injuries two days later.
