Emil Utitz

Emil Utitz (born May 27, 1883 in Roztoky , Bohemia ; † November 2, 1956 in Jena ) was a German-speaking philosopher , psychologist and art theorist .

Life

Utitz was born as the son of the leather goods manufacturer Gotthold Utitz and his wife Philippine born in Prague . Born a thousand . His parents come from Jewish families.

From 1902 to 1906 Utitz studied law , archeology , art history , philosophy and psychology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Leipzig and the Karl Ferdinand University in Prague . There he received his doctorate in 1906 under Christian von Ehrenfels , a student of Franz Brentano , to become Dr. phil. In 1910 he completed his habilitation with Franz Bruno Erhardt at the University of Rostock . Until 1916 private lecturer for philosophy, he received in 1916 a titular professor . In 1919, when David Katz was appointed to a newly created professorship, psychology was expanded at the University of Rostock and Utitz was given a teaching position in aesthetics and psychology in connection with this . In previous years, Utitz had been committed to founding an institute for psychology several times. From 1921 to 1924 Utitz held an unscheduled position as associate professor for philosophy at the University of Rostock . From 1925 to 1933 he was full professor at the Friedrichs University in Halle .

Utitz and his wife Ottilie geb. Schwarzkopf were from Judaism to Protestant church converted . After the general election in March 1933 by the Nazis leave provisionally on 29 April 1933 Utitz was on 23 September of the same year after the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service in the mixed final retirement . He then emigrated to Prague. From 1934 until the smashing of the rest of the Czech Republic , he held the chair for philosophy at the German Karl Ferdinand University . He belonged to a group of writers around the writer couple Gertrude and Johannes Urzidil .

Utitz was on 30 July 1942 by Prague in the Theresienstadt ghetto deported . Since he was one of the "prominent" prisoners together with Leo Baeck , he was employed as head of the library. For a time he was deputy head of "Leisure Time". Utitz and Baeck gave extensive lectures on various topics in Theresienstadt. Utitz gave his first lecture on November 24, 1942, on mental hygiene in Theresienstadt. Utitz and Baeck survived the difficult years in the “Ghetto” and reported on the “University over the Abyss” in the post-war period . Utitz's book Psychologie zivota Terezinskem koncentracznim tabore ( Psychology of Life in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp ), written in Czech , was published in Prague in 1947. In it he reports on a scientific society in Theresienstadt, which met twice a month on Thursday and had a strictly limited number of participants.

From 1945 Utitz taught again at the Charles University in Prague .
