Paul Menzer

Paul Menzer (born March 3, 1873 in Berlin ; † May 21, 1960 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German philosopher and educator .

Paul Menzer, the son of a senior postal secretary, volunteered for a year in the military after graduating from high school. He then began studying philosophy and German in Berlin and Strasbourg and finished it in 1897 when he obtained his doctorate.

He then became secretary of the Kant edition at the Berlin Academy . He held this position for 18 years. In the meantime he was able to complete his habilitation in 1900 and in 1906 became an associate professor in Marburg . He continued his university teaching activities in 1908 when he accepted the full professorship in Halle.

His attitude was national conservative. In addition to his teaching, he took care of student social issues. So he founded a student aid. The Halle “ tulip ” was converted into a student house on his initiative. From 1920 to 1921 he was rector of the University of Halle.

In 1933 he had to give up the chairmanship of the Hallisches Studentenwerk. At the same time he lost the chairmanship of the Kant Society. In the questionnaire of the Reich Ministry of Education , he stated that he was an "active member of the Halle-Nord resident army against the communist revolt in Central Germany". From 1934 he was a member of the NSV. Until 1936 he published the Kant studies. He did not want to take on any more responsibility and in 1938 initially ended his university career. On January 9, 1939, he received the Gold Loyalty Service Medal .

When the University of Halle began to work again in 1945 , he took over the philosophy lectures. In 1947 he was President of the First German Philosopher Congress after the Second World War in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the II. Congress (1948 in Mainz) and III. Congress (1950 in Bremen), at which the General Society for Philosophy in Germany was founded and Helmuth Plessner was elected its first President. In 1948 Paul Menzer finally retired. In 1953 he renewed the Kant studies with Gottfried Martin .

In 1960 Paul Menzer died in Halle (Saale).
