Auto bulk transporter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The automobile bulk transporter was a combined type of ship that was used to alternately transport automobiles and bulk goods .

history

During the 1950s, the transport of cars by sea grew strongly, so that one began to deal with the construction of car transporters , whereby due to the unpaired traffic at the time, attempts were initially made to convert existing bulk carriers for partial car transport. The first ship of this type was the Jakara of the Swedish shipping company Wallenius Lines , which was converted into the first bulk goods transporter for cars in 1955 on the Oresundvarvet in Landskrona , Sweden by adding hanging decks . On July 14, 1966, the Citadel, the first of a series of six bulk goods vehicles from the same shipyard, was delivered. Outwardly, these ships resembled a conventional bulk carrier, except for their gantry cranes on deck and the side ports for taking over the vehicle . In 1969 the Rheinstahl Nordseewerke in Emden started delivering another four series of such a combined ship type with the Long Charity . However, the ship type proved unsuccessful in view of the steadily increasing transport volume in the motor vehicle market and was replaced by pure car transporters and bulk carriers. The bulk car transporters were later mostly used as pure RoRo ships or bulk cargo ships.
