The territorial prelature Deán Funes was established on January 25, 1980 by Pope John Paul II with the papal bull Cum episcopus crucis axeatae from cessions of territory of the diocese of Cruz del Eje and subordinated to the archbishopric of Córdoba as a suffragan .
