Severin Rüttgers (born September 27, 1876 in Ameln near Jülich ; † September 22, 1938 in Koblenz ) was a German pedagogue , author , editor and translator who is best known as a reteller of German and Scandinavian folk books and heroic sagas , with which he Tried to propagate “popular” values.

Life

Rüttgers was a teacher in the Düsseldorf area, later a government and school councilor in Koblenz and a lecturer at the college for teacher training in Koblenz. He joined the NSDAP on May 1, 1932 .

After some hard-to-date writings on art history, which at least appeared before the First World War , folk books , Germanic and Scandinavian heroic sagas and Christian legends became the focus of his (post) narrative work. In addition, there are retellings of the stories from the Arabian Nights , Robinson Crusoe and medieval chivalric novels , some of which he translated himself from Flemish , English and Early New High German .

Rüttgers was also active as an editor of popular book series (including folk books for young people) and as a co-author of textbooks (Raum und Volk; German reading books for young women in higher education institutions). In addition to his adaptations of older literature, he published politically oriented writings by authors of the 19th century , such as Gustav Freytag (The Young Empire of the Germans), Heinrich von Treitschke (The German Ordensland Prussia) and Theodor Fontane (Spreeland).
