Dietrich Holzach (born January 30, 1836 in Basel , † November 4, 1905 in Aarau ) was a Swiss entrepreneur in the catering industry.

Life

Carl Friedrich Dietrich Holzach, son of the rope maker Carl Dietrich Holzach (1804–1836), who ran a shop for horsehair and forest hair (seaweed) in Basel , lost his father at the age of eight months. His mother then moved with him to Aarau, where he attended schools. Then he trained as a cooper and beer brewer . In 1859/60 he set up a brewery with an inn in a house bought by the lithographer Franz Xaver Keller on the newly laid out Bahnhofstrasse in Aarau, which traded under the name Dietrich Holzach . It is one of the first breweries in the canton of Aargau . In 1901 it was taken over by his son Friedrich Dietrich (1860–1901). He died in the same year, after which the company passed to his widow. When the latter also died in 1902 and their son Ernst (1879–1955), who had embarked on a career as a businessman, showed no interest in continuing the business, this meant the end of the brewery - while the company founder Dietrich was still alive -: it became Taken over by the Feldschlösschen brewery in Rheinfelden , founded in 1876 . The property was bought by the Aargauer Tagblatt corporation.

The restaurant with bowling alley attached to the brewery quickly developed into an important social meeting place in the canton capital of Aargau, especially for the better and also for the military. The Aarau Free Shooting Club was founded here in 1876. Numerous clubs used the restaurant as a club, such as the Cantonal School Student Gymnastics Club (KTV) Aarau.

Although he grew up in Aarau, Dietrich Holzach kept in touch with his native Basel. In 1873 he became a member of the local spinning weather guild , which traditionally included the cooper. In 1881 he also acquired the citizenship of Aarau and began to become increasingly involved in the social life of Aarau. He became a member of the Central Switzerland Geographical and Commercial Society in Aarau, founded in 1884 , an exclusive association of Aarau merchants and entrepreneurs who endeavored to build up an ethnographic collection.

Dietrich Holzach is the progenitor of the Aarau line of the Holzach family , from which among others the bank manager Robert Holzach , a great-grandson of Dietrich Holzach, emerged.
