Gustaf Adolf Wanner

Gustaf Adolf Wanner (born January 31, 1911 in Beggingen ; † September 14, 1984 ) was a Swiss historian and journalist.

Wanner received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and worked from 1935 to 1945 and from 1962 to 1976 as city editor for the Basler Nachrichten. From 1976 until his death he wrote for the Basler Zeitung , which had emerged from the merger of the Basler Nachrichten with the National-Zeitung. He wrote u. a. numerous contributions to the history of old houses and monuments, which also appeared in book form. He has also published several books on Basel's history, including a biography of Christoph Merian . Wanner, also known as GAW, was considered a “great connoisseur” and “most popular chronicler” of the city of Basel. Attention was paid to his stories of old town houses published in the daily press, some of which were also published posthumously in book form.

From 1949 to 1958 Wanner was consul of Denmark and Sweden in Basel. He represented Finland as consul from 1965 until his death. In 1977 he was awarded the Upper Rhine Culture Prize by the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Foundation in Basel .
