Pret a Manger (“Pret” for short) is a British sandwich chain whose restaurants are to be located in the fast-casual segment. Pret has been part of JAB Holding since 2018 .

history

The company was founded in 1986 in London by friends Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe. They bought the name and the first location from the bankruptcy of a restaurant owned by Londoner Jeffrey Hyman, who had run into financial difficulties with his restaurant, which was founded in 1983 or 1984 and had a similar theme. The name Prêt à Manger ( pʁɛt‿a mɑ̃ʒe ) comes from French and means “ready to eat”; It was coined by Hyman's sister, who based it on the term prêt-à-porter .

In 2001, McDonald’s Corporation, Chicago, acquired 33% of the company's shares. Pret then expanded into New York City (35 stores) and Hong Kong (14 stores). In November 2006 there were 155 stores in the UK, 118 of them in London. In February 2008, took over private equity -Unternehmen Bridgepoint 50% and the investment bank Goldman Sachs 25% of the shares, the company's founder Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe retain ownership of 25%. Unlike other fast food chains, Pret a Manger is not a franchise company. 85% of sales are made in London (where around 75% of all shops are located). In 2018 the company had 450 branches worldwide.

On May 29, 2018, JAB Holding announced that all of the previous owners' Pret-a-Manger shares had been acquired by the holding company.

The first branch in Germany opened in October 2018 in Berlin Central Station . The first branches in Belgium and Switzerland are scheduled to open in 2019. In 2019, Pret took over the British fast food chain EAT. with its 95 branches.

concept

The menu consists of sandwiches , submarine sandwiches (filled baguettes), wraps , sushi , soups and salads . In addition, pastries such as muffins , cakes , croissants, etc. a. offered. In addition, fruits such as bananas and apples, a selection of fruit juices and soft drinks as well as coffee specialties and tea are on offer.

The chain advertises that all the components of the sandwiches are fresh and without any additives , apart from baked goods that contain trans fatty acids with a minimum of preservatives. All sandwiches are freshly made in a kitchen in or near each individual store on the day of sale. All fresh products that have not been sold at the end of the day are picked up from boards and distributed to the homeless and needy. The sandwiches are packed in cardboard instead of plastic to emphasize that they are fresh and cannot be kept overnight.

Billboards in the shops, on the packaging and on the website constantly remind of the company's philosophy with numbered logos. The packaging and website describe recipes for some of their products.

Employee

In 1998 the company employed 1,400 people in the UK, 19% of whom were from the UK and 60% from other EU countries. Pret a Manger only selected one out of 14 applicants on average. By 2017 the number of employees (then also internationally) had grown to around 11,800.
