Avon Products Inc. is originally based in New York and now based in London . The company was founded by David McConnell. He started out as a bookseller and gave small perfume samples to his customers as a refreshment. When he noticed that people were very interested in perfume, he turned it into a company. Avon traditionally sells its products through “Avon Ladies” (sales consultants), known in Germany as “Avon consultants”.

history

McConnell founded the California Perfume Company in Manhattan , New York, in 1886 and began selling perfumes door-to-door. California Perfume Company was renamed Avon Products Inc. in 1939. The name Avon pays homage to William Shakespeare and his native Stratford-upon-Avon . The Avon offices in Germany and Great Britain were founded in 1959. The fashion jewelry collection first appeared in 1977.

The company has refrained from animal testing since 1988 . However, since 2012 the animal rights organization PETA has known that Avon Products Inc. has animal tests carried out in China in order to comply with local approval regulations.

In 2010 Avon operated in more than 100 countries worldwide. Sales are run by around 6 million consultants. The company's sales are over $ 10 billion.

After a price slump in 2011, the German entrepreneurial family Reimann offered to take over Avon for around 10 billion dollars in their cosmetics company Coty . Avon declined the offer as too low and instead announced that Andrea Jung will be replaced by Sherilyn McCoy as CEO on April 23, 2012.

In 2016, Avon Products sold its entire US business to Cerberus Capital Management for $ 170 million, meaning that the company now operates exclusively outside the United States. As a result, the company's headquarters were relocated to London. In May 2019, Avon confirmed an agreement for the complete takeover by the Brazilian cosmetics group Natura & Co by way of a share swap . The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2020 and create the world's fourth largest cosmetics company with combined sales of $ 10 billion. Natura & Co already own the brands Natura, Aesop and The Body Shop .
