Celine or Celine SA (until 2018: Céline ) is a fashion company founded in Paris in 1945 that is internationally known for upscale women's fashion and accessories such as handbags and shoes and has been part of the French luxury goods group LVMH since 1994 .

Company history

The company was founded in 1945 by Celine Vipiana (* 1920) and her husband Richard, originally as a shop for exclusive children's shoes in Paris. The main office was on Rue de Malte, near Place de la République . After a short time, further branches were opened. In 1950 Raymond Peynet drew a logo in the shape of a red elephant for the Vipianas . In 1959, the product range was expanded to include women's shoes. The small company made a name for itself with elegant women's moccasins . In 1964 perfume ( Vent Fou , no longer available) was added to the range, in 1966 leather goods such as handbags, gloves and belts . International expansion began with entry into the Japanese market . In 1967 the first Céline boutique opened in the Paris district of St. Germain des Prés. Prêt-à-porter fashion from Céline has been around since 1969. Céline Vipiana propagated in the 1970s, at a time when women mainly wore dresses , blouses with skirts and practical, elegant women's fashion, which she called "couture sportswear". During this time Richard Vipiana invented the logo in the form of a stylized sulky for Celine. The US market was opened in the early 1970s; a boutique on Rodeo Drive opened in 1976. Casual, elegant sportswear fashion for women from Paris sold very well in the USA. In 1973, based on the shape of the chain barriers around the Arc de Triomphe , two opposing C's were established as a logo, which is still used today.

The Dior owner Bernard Arnault bought Céline in 1987 for 2.7 billion francs , excluded the founding family Vipiana from the company and appointed the architect Peggy Huynh-Kinh as chief designer. From 1994 to 1996, the brand was integrated into the LVMH group, which Arnault has headed since 1989. In 1996 the women's perfume Magic was launched. In the 1990s there was a men's fashion line called Celine Homme with ready-made goods , which was discontinued in 1997.

In 1997, the American fashion designer Michael Kors von Arnault was hired by Céline as chief designer and gave the brand a new luster, for example through its association with Hollywood stars. The Celine handbags designed by Kors, including the Boogie and Poulbot models , became box office hits around the world. Further Celine perfumes for women and men were launched under Kors: Celine (2001), Fever (2004) etc. In 2004, the Italian-American fashion designer Roberto Menichetti, who had previously brought the Burberry brand back on track, took over the creative direction at Celine. As a result, the brand lost its appeal among the young, female target group . In 2005, under Menichetti, who left the company again in the same year, the Miss Celine second line was introduced (now discontinued). Menichetti was followed by the Croatian stylist Ivana Omazić as chief designer, who was also unable to build on Kors' success. In 2006 golf fashion was launched by Celine .

In 2008 the British fashion designer Phoebe Philo took over from Omazić. A Céline studio was set up in London for Philo, who had previously done highly acclaimed design work at Chloé . Philo initiated a radical restart at Céline and had all the old collections removed. The perfume business, which had consisted of moderately successful women's and men's fragrances in the early 2000s, was completely shut down. Under Philo, the sales prices for Celine articles were increased, the sales figures rose again, and Celine fashion became more minimalist, elegant, cool and modern. Philo's achievements also include the expansion of the lucrative accessories business, for example through the launch of high-priced It bags from 2010. For her work at Céline, Philo was named Designer of the Year by the British Fashion Council in 2010 . At the end of December 2017, Celine announced that Philo had resigned.

At the end of January 2018, the fashion house announced that Hedi Slimane would take over the role of "Artistic, Creative and Image Director" at Celine from February 1, 2018. A couture line, a men's fashion collection and new perfumes from Céline are launched under Slimane . In autumn 2018 Slimane changed the company's brand identity and deleted the accent aigu from the company name.

By the end of the 1980s, Céline owned over 85 boutiques worldwide. As of 2010, there were around 130 Celine stores in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Japan and China. There has been a shop in Munich since the end of 2017 . The best-selling products since the late 2000s have included the high-priced Trapèze , Luggage and Trio handbags . There are waiting lists for some of the company's coveted handbag models. Since 2014, Céline's Paris headquarters have been located in the city palace Hôtel Colbert de Torcy on Rue Vivienne near the Bourse . An online shop was announced for 2018 on its own website. In 2010, sales of the Celine brand were estimated at 200 million euros; In 2017 it was 700 to 800 million euros (LVMH does not publish any individual sales for its brands). From 2000, the CEO of Céline was Arnault's confidante Jean-Marc Loubier, from 2006 the LVMH manager Serge Brunschwig, from 2008 the Italian Marco Gobbetti and since 2017 the French Séverine Merle.
