Narciso Rodriguez (born January 27, 1961 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American fashion designer .

Life

Rodriguez grew up as the son of Cuban immigrants in Newark , New Jersey . After finishing school, Rodriguez studied art and design at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City , where he graduated in 1982. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a freelance designer and in 1985 was employed by the Anne Klein fashion company in New York as a fashion designer under the then chief designer Donna Karan . In 1991 Rodriguez switched to Calvin Klein , where he mainly designed women's clothing.

In 1995 Rodriguez became a fashion designer at Cerruti in Paris , where he stayed until the summer of 1997. He gained more attention in the fashion world in 1996 for the wedding dress of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy , who had been a colleague of his at Calvin Klein. After Rodriguez had financial problems in the meantime, he achieved further professional success through new designs. In 1997 he presented his own women's fashion for the first time under his name in Milan in collaboration with the Italian fashion manufacturer AEFFE, which had a 50% stake in Rodriguez's newly founded fashion company. In the same year he accepted the position of creative director at Loewe (Madrid) , which he held until 2001.

In 1998 Rodriguez received the Perry Ellis Young Talent Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America . Narciso Rodriguez moved to New York City in 2001. In the same year he opened a boutique under his name in Milan (closed in 2007). In 2005, Narciso Rodriguez began offering men's clothing (discontinued in 2008). In May 2007, the Liz Claiborne company acquired the 50 percent stake in Rodriguez's fashion brand previously held by AEFFE. In 2008 Rodriguez bought back the Claiborne stake due to differences of opinion. In 2009 Rodriguez designed a limited women's collection for Ebay; In 2012 he became a consultant for the fashion brand Banana Republic . His clients in the 1990s and 2000s included Salma Hayek , Claire Danes , Sarah Jessica Parker , Rachel Weisz and Sônia Braga . In addition, Rodriguez designed, among other things, wedding dresses for celebrities, carpets, fur fashion and workwear for restaurants and hotels. His celebrity customers include Michelle Obama , who wore his clothes to the media on the night of the presidential election in the United States in 2008 and 2009 for the inauguration of her husband Barack Obama , whose strong supporter in the fashion world was Rodriguez.

In 2003 Rodriguez launched a women's perfume called For Her together with Shiseido (Beauté Prestige International) . The men's perfume For Him followed in July 2007. In 2009 the women's perfume Essence was launched; 2014 the women's fragrance Narciso .
