Lancôme is a cosmetics brand of the French group L'Oréal . It encompasses the three areas of care , make-up and perfume and, according to the company, is number one worldwide in facial care through high-priced products (“selective facial care ”) and make-up. Products of this brand are sold in more than 140 countries.

Company history

The French company Lancôme was founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean . He derived the company name from the historic Château de Lancosme, which is located south of Paris, near Vendœuvres . For the company logo he chose a stylized rose that still represents the brand today . In the founding year, Petitjean launched five perfumes, which were later followed by several more. The flacons , which are now considered collector's items , were designed by the French artist Georges Delhomme .

In 1936, Lancôme launched its first facial care product, the Nutrix cream . Chemist Pierre Vélon used a previously unknown method to mix natural proteins and waxes in water and oil. The cream enriched with perfume, which is still available today, became a best seller. In 1938, the first rose- scented lipstick collection was launched under the name Rose de France . A number of other perfumes, make-up and care products followed, which were available in 68 countries by 1955. In February 1942 Armand Petitjean founded the in-house École Lancôme to instruct women in style and elegance and thus to become ambassadors for the brand. In 1952 Trésor created a perfume that was to become a fragrance classic, the original fragrance of which was composed by the perfumer Jean Hervelin and the diamond-shaped bottle was again designed by Georges Delhomme.

In 1964, the family business , which Armand Marcel Petitjean, the founder's son, had now taken over, was owned by the French cosmetics group L'Oréal, where it became part of the luxury products division . Lancôme is one of the most successful of the group's 23 brands. In 2010 it made sales of over 1 billion euros on the German market for the first time, making it the market leader in the field of high-priced facial care products.

Products and advertising media

Lancôme produces products in the areas of perfume, care and make-up. The Trésor fragrance is one of the brand's best-known and top-selling perfumes . In 1990 a new interpretation by the perfumer Sophia Grojsman appeared. Other well-known creations are Trésor In Love , Miracle , Hypnôse and La vie est belle (English: life is beautiful). In the skin care sector, the Génifique , Hydra Zen and Nutrix series are among the most important. With Hypnôse , Teint Miracle and In Love , the company was also able to establish itself in the make-up sector.

Lancôme was able to attract actresses such as Kate Winslet , Julia Roberts , Penélope Cruz , Lily Collins , Emma Watson and Janina Uhse for advertising campaigns . The youngest global brand ambassador for Lancôme has been the American actress Amanda Seyfried since October 2019 .
