Terri Clark
Terri Clark (* 5 August 1968 as Terri Lynn Sauson in Montreal , Quebec ) is a Canadian country singer whose career began in the mid-1990s. By 2009 she had 22 hits in the American country charts, including the two number one hits You're Easy on the Eyes (1998) and Girls Lie Too (2004). She is currently the only Canadian who has been accepted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. She received this honor in 2004.
Beginnings
Terri Clark's grandparents Ray and Betty Gauthier were well known Canadian country musicians who opened shows for Johnny Cash , George Jones and Little Jimmy Dickens , among others . Clark's mother, Linda, was part of the folk scene and taught her to play the guitar when she was nine. After finishing school, she moved to Nashville in 1987 , where she was hired by Tootsie's Orchid Lounge for fifteen dollars a day . It took several years, in which she had to struggle to keep her head above water with simple jobs and poorly paid gigs, until she received a record deal from the Mercury label in 1994 . Clark was marketed more traditionally with a cowboy hat and clothing compared to other female singers in the genre.
Career
Their first single, Better Things To Do , made it to number three on the American country charts in 1995. Her debut album Terri Clark , which was released in the same year and contains several self-composed songs, was awarded platinum in the USA for over a million CDs sold. With When Boy Meets Girl and If I Were You , further top 10 singles were released. In early 1996 she was the first Canadian to appear in the Grand Ole Opry . She has also received several awards in her home country: in 1997 she was honored with the Juno Award as best new artist and in 2001 as best country singer of the year .
The following two albums, Just The Same (1996) and How I Feel (1998), sold just as well as their first album. They went platinum in both the United States and Canada. Clark had finally established himself in the scene. Numerous big hits in the country charts followed: Now That I Found You (1998, No. 2) and You're Easy on the Eyes (1998, No. 1), I Just Wanna Be Mad (2002, No. 2), I. Wanna Do It All (2003, 3rd place) and finally her last top 10 success to date, Girls Lie Too (2004, 1st place). Although their albums continued to place themselves high in the charts, sales fell and only the hit collection Greatest Hits 1994-2004 went gold. The album Life Goes On (2005) had a difficult time from the start: The singles that were released were only poorly placed, the pre-release The World Needs a Drink was not even considered for the final CD release. The title was also changed at short notice - Honky Tonky songs could be read in some press releases before. After these difficulties, Clark left the record company Mercury, which then published two reviews of the artist's work.
The record label BNA signed the artist in 2007, the singles Dirty Girl and In My Next Life were great successes in Canada, but only gave Clark medium hits in the USA. As a result, the planned album My Next Life was postponed several times and ultimately not released. The BNA contract ended prematurely in late 2008. The following live album Terri Clark Live: Road Rage (2009) was only released on the Internet. A new studio work followed shortly afterwards with The Long Way Home . This made her debut on an independent label . In interviews, she also announced that in the future she primarily wanted to take care of her career in her home country and possibly also overseas. She is still one of the most popular country musicians in Canada.
