Death from Above , mainly known as Death from Above 1979 from 2004 to 2017 , is a Canadian indie rock band from Toronto , consisting of Jesse F. Keeler ( electric bass , synthesizer ) and Sebastien Grainger ( vocals , drums ). Her music is characterized by the use of few instruments and effects. In 2006 the band was officially dissolved, on February 4, 2011 they announced their reunion.

history

At first they called themselves simply Death from Above , but after a legal dispute with the dance-funk label of the same name from New York this was added in 1979 (Grainger was born). It is rumored that the two musicians met in prison and then decided to live together in a funeral home. In truth, Keeler and Grainger met at a Sonic Youth concert. The project Death from Above 1979 was finally launched in 2000. The 6-song EP Heads Up! followed in 2002.

Her debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine , which was released on October 26, 2004 in the USA and on July 4, 2005 in Germany, received critical acclaim from the Kerrang! and NME , and respected musicians like Josh Homme from the Queens of the Stone Age are fans of the band. Their music is fast and has precise beats, sometimes brutal, sometimes a little more pop-heavy. Death from Above also made a name for themselves in 1979 by being on tour around the world all the time. Often they gave up to three gigs in just one evening or not infrequently also played at a fan’s home. This was made easier by their rather reduced equipment. Her video for the single Romantic Rights was awarded a VideoFact Prize at the MuchMusic Video Music Awards in 2005.

On August 3, 2006, Jesse F. Keeler announced via a message on their official website that the band would no longer exist. The move had been planned for over a year but was still kept secret. Keeler is still active as a musician with MSTRKRFT (master power). Grainger has been aiming for a solo career since November 2006.

On February 4, 2011, Death from Above 1979 announced on their website that they will tour together again, including performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival .
