Jason Isbell (born February 1, 1979 in Green Hill , Alabama ) is an American musician . It is assigned to genres such as Country Rock , Americana / Alternative Country or Southern Rock .

Private life

Isbell was married to Shonna Tucker from 2002 , who was the bassist for Drive-by Truckers at the time. The marriage failed a few years later. The reasons were, in particular, Isbell's alcoholism and drug use. In 2013 he married the violinist Amanda Shires , with whom he has a daughter.

Career

Jason Isbell began his career as a guitarist and songwriter with the Drive-By Truckers and was there when the alternative country band broke through in the mid-2000s. In 2007, however, he decided to start his own career and got out. His first album Sirens of the Ditch , which he released in the same year with accompanying band as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit , was a respectable success and reached number 33 on the independent charts. Two years later, album number two followed with the band name as the title and this time it reached a position in the official album charts . The first years were mainly characterized by his extensive tours with over 200 performances per year.

In 2010 he returned to his homeland in the north of the state of Alabama , which was particularly affected by the economic changes, and processed the observations and experiences in his third album Here We Rest . It received critical acclaim and made it into the top 100 of the album charts for the first time. The following album, Southeastern , became even more thoughtful and personal and also received a lot of critical acclaim. It was the first album that he only released under his own name. The work brought him further up the charts.

The great success came in 2015 with the album Something More Than Free . His fifth album reached number 6 on the official album charts and topped the rock, folk, and country charts. Isbell was also successful internationally and placed in Great Britain , Australia and Scandinavia , among others . With the album and the song 24 Frames it contained , he won two awards at the 2016 Grammy Awards .
