The Salar de Surire is a salt lake , or a salt flat (Salar) in northern Chile. The word Surir is in the local language, the name of the rheas .
The Salar de Surire is located in the Provincia de Arica in the Región de Arica y Parinacota , the nearest towns are Parinacota and the small town of Putre , which are on Route 11 . The lake lies at an altitude of 4245 m and has an area of 1750 km². The inflow is via the Surir. The thermal springs of Polloquere lie on the lake.
Lithium-containing salt is mined on the site of the lake and transported by truck on the feeder road to Ruta 11. The National Park "Monumento Natural Salar de Surire" was established in 1983 in the eastern part of the lake, it covers around 112 km².
Darwin rheas , the Punas grouse , 11,000 flamingos , vicuñas and llamas live in the region .
