The 2003 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 28, 2003. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 1, 2002 to June 9, 2003. The award ceremony took place at Radio City Music Hall , New York City , New York . Chris Rock was the moderator .

This award remained in public memory mainly because of a kiss performance between Madonna , Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during the performance of a medley consisting of Like a Virgin and Hollywood . However, only the kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna was shown on television, while the subsequent kissing scene between Madonna and Christina Aguilera was not shown. Instead, the face of Justin Timberlake , whose relationship with Spears came to an end shortly before, was shown. Missy Elliott , who took the stage shortly after, also received little attention.

Most of the awards went to Beyoncé (feat. Jay-Z ), Justin Timberlake and the band Coldplay , while Missy Elliott topped the nominations with eight (but only won two awards).

The Best Video From a Film category was awarded for the last time and went to Lose Yourself by Eminem from the film 8 Mile .
