DMX (* 18th December 1970 as Earl Simmons in Mount Vernon , New York ; † 9. April 2021 in White Plains , New York) was an American rapper and actor . His most successful song is X Gon 'Give It to Ya from 2003.

Life

Earl Simmons was born in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1970 and grew up in neighboring Yonkers in Westchester County . He grew up in a very religious and Christian family under poor conditions. His mother was a supporter of Jehovah's Witnesses . In his youth he was imprisoned in a juvenile detention center for a robbery, among other things . He attended the same school with Jay-Z , Busta Rhymes and Biggie Smalls . His stage name "DMX" means Dark Man X, although he called himself "Divine Master of the Unknown" in his debut single. He became known nationwide by winning The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype Awards and his debut single Born Loser . However, the single was not a commercial success. More albums and singles followed, which were more successful. In 1998 he joined the rap crew Ruff Ryders .

His debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot was released in 1998 and topped the Billboard charts. Later came the albums Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1998), … And Then There Was X (1999), The Great Depression (2001) and his fifth album Grand Champ (2003), when it was released he ended his career as Announced musician. In July 2005, however, he announced a new album, which was released in August 2006 under the title Year of the Dog ... Again . All albums except the latter entered the Billboard charts at number 1, Year of the Dog… Again at number 2. In 2006, he ran his own show Soul of a Man on the American television station Black Entertainment Television , in which he reported on his Christian life. In 2003 he wrote his autobiography EARL: The Autobiography of DMX .

His albums Walk With Me Now and You'll Fly With Me Later , scheduled for late 2008 , were postponed to the summer of 2009 after he was sentenced to 90 days in prison in January 2009 in Phoenix for animal abuse, drug offenses, and theft. In 2011 he was imprisoned again for various offenses (including violating probation requirements and bodily harm). In July 2011, he was released after seven months. He then announced a new studio album. Undisputed was due out in June 2012, with guest contributions from Busta Rhymes , Tyrese and Jennifer Hudson , but was then postponed to September 2012. The announced feature guests were not represented on the album. The first single from the album, I Don't Dance , was released a few months before the album was released.

On April 2, 2021, DMX was admitted to a hospital in White Plains , New York after suffering a heart attack from an overdose . He died on April 9, 2021 at the age of 50. After Simmons death, 4 of his songs entered the top 10 of the iTunes song charts on the same day .

Arrests and prison terms

From 1986 to 2015 DMX was arrested again and again for various crimes and sentenced to prison terms. In 1986 he went to prison for stealing a dog. He was sentenced to two years of youth imprisonment. However, only a few weeks after his sentence began, he and his cellmate escaped from prison. His mother forced him to serve his term. Simmons was sent to prison again for car theft in 1988 and was later transferred to a security prison after trying to blackmail a fellow inmate for drugs. He was released in the summer of 1988. Shortly after he became known, arrests followed for animal cruelty, reckless driving, driving without a license, drug possession, and forging identity. In 1999 the Fort Lee Police Department found illegal gun possession during a house search. In 1999, Teaneck, New Jersey, was charged with animal cruelty when 12 pit bulls were found in his home. The charges were dismissed after DMX agreed to take responsibility and announce the service for an animal rights group.

In 2000, DMX served a 15-day prison sentence for possession of marijuana. In 2001 he was sentenced to jail for driving without a license and possessing marijuana. His appeal to reduce the sentence was rejected. Rather, he was charged with assault for throwing objects at prison guards. DMX went into rehab in 2002 to treat his drug addiction. In January 2002, DMX pleaded guilty to 13 counts of animal cruelty in New Jersey, two charges of harassment and one charge of disorderly behavior and drug possession. Eventually, he pleaded for fines, probation, and charitable "no" celebrations, and played against the dangers of guns and animal abuse in public announcements.

In June 2004, DMX was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport on charges of cocaine possession, criminal identity forgery, possession of a gun, threats, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol while alleging a federal agent and tried to hijack a vehicle. He was conditionally released on December 8, 2004, but pleaded guilty on October 25, 2005 of violating the law on probation. On November 18, 2005, DMX was sentenced to 70 days in prison for violating probation. The delay in entering detention meant that the original 60-day sentence was extended by 10 days. DMX was released on December 30, 2005 for "good behavior".

On May 9, 2008, DMX was arrested for drug possession and animal cruelty after trying to barricade himself in his Arizona home. DMX pleaded guilty to drug possession, theft and animal cruelty in a hearing held on December 30, 2008. On January 31, 2009, he was sentenced to 90 days in prison. On May 22, 2009, he pleaded guilty to attempted assault. After serving four out of six months for parole violation, DMX was released from prison on July 6, 2010. That day he was filmed to show his path to recovery. However, DMX was arrested three weeks later.

On July 27, 2010, he was sentenced to ninety days in prison for negligent driving by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Court. On November 19, 2010, DMX was arrested in Maricopa County, Arizona, on charges of violating his probation by consuming alcohol (at a performance). On December 20, 2010, DMX was transferred to the Arizona State Prison's Mental Health Unit and released on July 18, 2011. On August 24, 2011 DMX was arrested for speeding, in a 105 km / h zone with a speed of 164 km / h, reckless driving and driving with a suspended driving license. While DMX admitted to being too fast, it claims it was going 85 miles per hour (137 km / h). On February 13, 2013, DMX was arrested in Spartanburg, South Carolina for driving without a license. On July 26, 2013, DMX was arrested again in Greenville County, South Carolina and charged with drinking and driving without a license. On August 20, 2013, DMX was arrested again in Greer, South Carolina, during a traffic stop after a car he was a passenger in made an improper U-turn. He was arrested on parole on a pending arrest warrant. Four packages of marijuana were also found in the vehicle, which he and the driver performed for them. On November 4, 2013, DMX was arrested again by Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Police after police noticed DMX behind the wheel of a vehicle at the terminal. DMX was arrested on charges of driving under license, being uninsured and lacking a license.

On June 26, 2015, DMX was arrested in New York on charges of robbery in Newark, New Jersey, and outstanding child support payments. On July 14, 2015, DMX was sentenced to 6 months in prison for failing to pay $ 400,000 in alimony. On December 14, 2015, a warrant was issued for DMX after he missed a trial to address childcare issues with his ex-wife Tashera Simmons and their four children.

Private

Simmons was married from 1999 to 2010. The couple have four children. During this time he had numerous affairs and at least two illegitimate children from different women. Since DNA tests identified him as a father, he had to pay child support to one of the mothers, as well as compensation and fines of $ 1.5 million, including for defamation and false information. The rapper accused her of raping him. He is said to have later admitted to having voiced this allegation in order to appease his wife. As Simmons reported in an interview, he was engaged to the model Yadira Borrego. The two have a daughter. In a radio interview, he said he was the father of 15 children.
