The e-zine laut.de gave the sound carrier three out of a possible five evaluation points. The texts are described as meaningless. The album is also criticized as monotonous.

“Overall, this album cannot convince, even if it was number one in the USA. The last releases have been a lot better, one could almost assume that another record was quickly released before the name DMX was erased from the minds of consumers. You have to wait and see if he will take a little more time for his next productions in order to make music of higher quality again. "

- Final conclusion of the rating by Laut.de editor Max Helke

The music magazine Rolling Stone rated … And Then There Was X with three out of five points. In the review, the editors point out that DMX follows the style of his first two records on his third album and does not deliver anything new to the listener. However, this is what the rapper's fans have come to expect from his album.
