The Great Depression ( English for " the great depression ") is the fourth studio album of American rapper DMX . It was released on October 23, 2001 on the labels Ruff Ryders Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings .

DMX, who also produced some songs himself, acted as executive producers on the album, as well as Dee, Waah Dean and Latarche Nas Collins . Four songs were produced by Dame Grease , while Swizz Beatz contributed two instrumentals. Other beats come from music producers Just Blaze , Black Key, PK and Kidd Kold.

Cover design

The album cover is kept in dark green tones and shows a jetty on the water. Above that, the contours of DMX's face are indicated, who is looking at the viewer. At the top of the picture are the gray letters DMX and at the bottom of the picture is the title The Great Depression in green.

Guest Posts

DMX is supported by different singers on four of the songs on the album. Dia has a guest appearance on the song Bloodline Anthem , while Stephanie Mills can be heard on When I'm Nothing . Faith Evans works with DMX on I Miss You , and Mashonda is featured on You Could Be Blind . The rappers Big Stan, DJ Kayslay , Jinx da Juvy, Kashmir, Loose, Drag-On , Mysonne and Mic Geronimo also have guest contributions on the hidden tracks .

Chart successes and singles

The Great Depression entered the German charts at number 10 on November 5, 2001 and was at number 21 and 19 in the following weeks. The album stayed in the top 100 for 14 weeks. In the United States, the album rose to number 1 entered the charts and stayed in the top 200 for 27 weeks.

As singles , the songs were We Right Here , Who We Be , and I Miss You decoupled. In Europe, Who We Be and We Right Here appeared as double A-sides and reached number 62 in the German charts.

Sales figures and awards

The Great Depression went platinum in the United States for over 1.8 million units sold in the year of its release . In the UK, the album received a gold record for more than 100,000 sales in 2013 .

Pascal Jürgens from laut.de rated The Great Depression with four out of a possible five points. He says that the tracks sound “all smoother, more uniform and a bit more harmless” than on the previous albums, but still “unleash hell”. The songs Trina Moe , We Right Here , Bloodline Anthem and You Could Be Blind were particularly positively highlighted and the guest contribution by Mashonda was also praised.
