The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place in New York City on August 30, 2020 . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States , the event, which was originally intended to be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in front of little or no audience, has been moved outside. Instead, live concerts are to take place in front of little or no audience across the city's five boroughs. The hygiene regulations should be complied with comprehensively.

The 17 nominations for the Push Best New Artist were announced on July 23, 2020, the remaining nominations on July 30, 2020. Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga lead them with nine nominations each , followed by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd with six each .

Keke Palmer was the moderator .
