Girija Devi
Girija Devi (born May 8, 1929 in Varanasi ; † October 24, 2017 in Calcutta ) was an Indian singer, music teacher and composer .
The daughter of a Zamindar had her first music lessons with Sarju Prasad Mishra and Shirchand Mishra at the age of five . She made her debut in 1949 with All India Radio's Allahabad and gave a concert in Arrah that same year . This was the beginning of her career as a successful singer of Indian classical music. In particular, it helped the Thumri , a genre of light classical music, to gain reputation . Concert tours have taken her throughout India, the USA, the Soviet Union and many European countries. She was also known as the composer of numerous thumri. For her achievements she was awarded the Padma Shri (1972) and the Padma Bhushan (1989). From the early 1990s she taught at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy , where Dalia Rahut , Jayita Pandey and Satyanarayan Misra were among her students. She then held a visiting professorship at Banaras Hindu University .
