biography

1986 - 2013: Early life and first musical experiences

Anderson Paak was born and raised in Oxnard , California as part of an Afro-American-Korean family. When he was seven years old, he saw his father, who was separated from his mother, beat her and then was arrested and sentenced to a long prison term. In 1997 he began playing the drums in the local Baptist Church and from then on produced his own music in his home. Then, towards the end of his high school education, his mother was taken into custody for millions of dollars in fraud. From then on he kept himself afloat with odd jobs and occasional appearances as a musician under the stage name Breezy Lovejoy. He finally got a permanent job on a legal marijuana plantation in Santa Barbara and released his first EP in 2010 with the title Violets Are Blue . In 2011, however, he was unexpectedly released, resulting in high debts, so that he was briefly homeless with his wife and child.

However, Anderson was then hired by Sa-Ra’s Shafiq Husayn as an assistant, cameraman , editor , songwriter and producer . This gave him access to Sa-Ra's recording studio , where he was able to finish his debut OBE, Vol. 1 , which he published again in 2012 under the pseudonym Breezy Lovejoy.

Immediately afterwards he was recruited by Haley Reinhart , whom he accompanied as a drummer on their tour .

2013 - 2016: Change of artist name, breakthrough with Suede and first chart successes

In 2013 he changed his stage name to Anderson .Paak. According to his own statement, the point should always remind him and others of the importance of details. In the same year he recorded an EP under the new name , which consisted exclusively of cover versions and was accordingly called Cover Art .

His second album, Venice , was released the following year . He also worked with the producers of the label Stones Throw Records , Knxwledge together and published with this as the duo NxWorries an EP. The piece contained therein Suede made in the World Wide Web for attention where it on the platforms SoundCloud and YouTube each received about one million calls. Paak then received an invitation from an A&R manager at Aftermath Entertainment to attend a recording studio session with Dr. Dre . He heard Suede for the first time and was enthusiastic, which led to Paak being featured on six songs on the Compton album .

As a result, he suddenly became known to a wider public and finally signed a recording contract with Dr. Dres Aftermath Entertainment . First, however, at the beginning of 2016, he released his next long player, Malibu , with whom he was able to achieve his first chart success. The album hit the Swiss and US album charts, but left both after a week before re-entering the US twice in 2017. In the summer of 2016 he gave a Tiny Desk Concert , which, with over 52 million views on YouTube, became the most successful concert in the series.

He subsequently appeared on the works of numerous other artists before working again with Knxwledge and with him as NxWorries the album Yes Lawd! recorded.
