Noname (born September 18, 1991 ; real name : Fatimah Nyeema Warner ) is an American rapper , poet and music producer from Chicago , Illinois .

Life

Fatimah Nyeema Warner grew up up to the Middleschool in Bronzeville , Chicago, with her grandparents who tried to relieve the mother. Warner's mother had opened a bookstore she ran at the time her daughter was born, and her father was also busy because of his work as a publishing director. After she returned to her mother, the relationship between the two remained strained, especially since she now had another daughter.

Fatimah Warner developed a preference for blues in her childhood and youth , but her interest in rap music came through slam poetry . After watching several Def Poetry slams, she went to YOUMedia, a local up-and-coming writer program, where she also met Chance the Rapper , Mick Jenkins , Jamila Woods and Smino . There she called herself “Noname Gypsy” (German: “Nameless Gypsy”). She built a fan base through the slams. In 2013 she made a highly acclaimed appearance on Chance the Rapper's album Acid Rap . After she realized in 2016 that "gypsy", similar to the German " Zigeuner ", was a discriminatory term, she dropped the pseudonym.

Around the same time, she released her debut mixtape Telephones , with which she toured the United States for the first time. She then moved to Los Angeles , where she continued her musical and poetic career. She performed in various rap and stand-up clubs and made friends with the Los Angeles comedian scene. In 2017 she made an appearance on the Splash .

On September 14, 2018, she released her debut album, Room 25 , which was highly acclaimed by critics. In the annual list of the German-language Rolling Stone magazine, it took fifth place. The English Rolling Stone described her as one of the best living rappers. In October 2018 she appeared with Stephen Colbert with a medley of three songs .

Music genre

Noname's rap style is strongly influenced by the poetry slam scene, therefore very poetic and soft. She uses themes such as love, sex, death and identity. Warner plays a rap inspired by soul , funk and jazz in the tradition of De La Soul , A Tribe Called Quest and Lauryn Hill .
