Mick Jenkins (born April 16, 1991 in Huntsville , Alabama ; real name: Jayson Jenkins ), also known as Mickalas Cage , is an American rap and hip-hop musician who worked for the New York independent label Cinematic Music Group is under contract.

Life

Jayson Jenkins temporarily moved to Florida after his parents separated in 1998 . In 2000 he moved with his younger sister and his mother, who suffers from lupus erythematosus , to Chicago , the city of origin for most of his relatives. As a teenager in South Side Chicago , he spent a lot of time exploring the social, cultural and artistic diversity of the city. His conclusion made Mick Jenkins at the Hirsch Metropolitan High School in Chicago . He took part in the school's law academy program, took preparatory courses for a law degree and worked for a few months as an intern for the district court in the Dirksen Federal Building . Disaffected and with a growing interest in fashion design , he turned his back on the law academy program in 2009 and finally began studying public relations at Oakwood University in Huntsville . After his father, who worked as a carpenter at Oakwood University , lost his job and the right to reduced tuition fees for family members, Mick Jenkins had to leave college in 2012 due to the high tuition fees without a degree.

According to his own statements, Mick Jenkins already had a pronounced interest in music , poetry and poetry slam during his school days , as well as a weakness for writing his own poems. At the school he was a member of a theater company called Controversy and in 2007 and 2008 he participated in some of the open youth slams organized by the non-profit Young Chicago Authors . Poetry then brought him to rap during his student days :

"Same as poetry, it just kind of spiraled out of control into what it is today."

Mick Jenkins says he has a soft spot for jazz and neo-soul . According to his own statements, his inspirations include the artists Sade , Prince , Maxwell , Bilal , Jill Scott , Common , Mos Def , Talib Kweli and Kanye West .

During his studies, Mick Jenkins created a total of five mixtapes . After his de-registration, he took a job at a marketing agency in Chicago. On the way back from a visit to Alabama , Jenkins was arrested in March 2013 for possession of marijuana . Because he could not and did not want to pay the outstanding fine, he spent 34 days in a prison in Alabama, whereupon he also lost his job. After his release he began to focus on his music and his lyrics and started his rap career with new energy:

“I had to get serious about the content. I couldn't be seriously making music about nothing. "

Jenkins then published the mixtape Trees & Truths , which he had already worked on before his imprisonment and which marked the beginning of his own reorientation towards meaningful texts and meaningful projects. With this official debut mixtape he first gained more attention, among other things because of the acid-jazz- heavy production, the numerous biblical allegories and the emotional poetry .

In 2014 he published his project The Water [s] , which he built around the central idea of the metaphorical comparison of water with truth and knowledge. With this mixtape, which he had worked on for about a year - he wrote his first songs during his time in prison - and with the provocative single Martyrs , he had his breakthrough. After the release of the single with the accompanying, equally provocative music video on the video portal YouTube in December 2013, the creative indie label Cinematic Music Group took him into care.

In the fall of 2014, Jenkins took part in the Smoker's Club World Wide Roller's Tour and performed with Method Man , Redman , B-Real and Berner. In February 2015, Jenkins' first US- wide tour started, which he organized together with Kirk Knight , a member of the New York hip-hop collective Pro Era . Then Mick Jenkins accompanied Joey Badass on his World Domination Tour in June 2015 through the USA .

Jenkins released his first official EP Wave [s] on August 21, 2015. On the following tour through North America Jenkins was accompanied by the French producer and DJ STWO. He completed the European tour in October and November 2015 together with The MIND.

His nested and poetic texts, the subtle, socially critical, and often provocative messages of his songs, the numerous word games and the metaphorical comparisons that he uses as the basis of his projects were positively judged by critics .

Jenkins is a member of the hip-hop collective Free Nation . According to its own statement, the group represents and promotes creative, open thinking and rejects narrow-minded views imposed by existing powers. Jenkins has also collaborated with Kiesza , Joey Badass , Kirk Knight , Noname Gypsy, Chance the Rapper , Vic Mensa, Saba, Jean Deaux, BadBadNotGood , Kaytranada , The MIND and THEMpeople, among others.

In 2016 he released his first studio album entitled The Healing Component . Pieces of a Man , the second studio album, was released on October 26, 2018 by Free Nation and Cinematic Music Group.
