history

Badbadnotgood in 2012

Matthew Tavares, Alexander Sowinski and Chester Hansen met while studying jazz at Humber College in Toronto and discovered their love for hip-hop. Her influences include rap groups such as The Roots , Three 6 Mafia and Mos Def as well as jazz classics such as Bill Evans , John Coltrane and Scott LaFaro . After it was founded, the BadBadNotGood trio began recording instrumental jazz versions of hip-hop pieces, using musicians such as J Dilla , Nas and Kanye West in the catalog .

With these cover versions they recorded their debut album BBNG in 2011 , which was released via download. The band's music initially spread widely on the Internet, including praise from Tyler, the Creator , who shortly thereafter recorded a session with BadBadNotGood himself. The follow-up album BBNG2 from 2012 already consisted to a large extent of own compositions; but there were also new interpretations of pieces by Joy Division , James Blake and My Bloody Valentine , among others .

In 2014 published BadBadNotGood on the label Innovative Leisure with III their first album, which consisted entirely of original compositions. The work was consistently received positively by the critics. The follow-up album Sour Soul was created in 2015 in collaboration with Ghostface Killah .

At the beginning of 2016, multi-instrumentalist Leland Whitty (including flute , clarinet , saxophone , vibraphone , violin ) joined the band. In July of the same year, the release of the studio album IV took place. Guest musicians include Mick Jenkins , Kaytranada and Colin Stetson .

reception

BadBadNotGood occasionally attracted attention in critical circles with critical comments on the training of young jazz musicians. Pianist Matthew A. Tavares accused the college scene of an exaggerated focus on tradition and technical skills and a lack of individualism and familiarity with current musical developments. He also attacked the pianist Robert Glasper , who also works in the border area between jazz and hip-hop, with similar allegations.

The statements provoked clear contradictions, for example from Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen and from Alex Rodriguez, who accused the band of not being aware of the racist implications of these statements. Peter Margasak denounced the musical quality of BadBadNotGood in the Chicago Reader and described her music as a jazz substitute for hip-hop fans and jazz for people who would never have heard real jazz. Anthony Dean-Harris defended BadBadNotGood on nextbop.com against these allegations and described them as good musicians from a new generation who are simply no longer so familiar with the subject of racism , but who appeal to a large audience and also musically could develop further.
