history
The newspaper was founded in 1845 by William Harris as The Bytown Packet . In 1851 the newspaper was renamed The Ottawa Citizen . The newspaper has been with different owners over the years. In 1846 Harris sold the newspaper to Bell and Henry J. Friel. In 1849, Robert Bell bought the paper in 1849. In 1877, Charles Herbert Mackintosh, became the chief author under Robert Bell. In 1879 the Southam took over the newspaper and added it to its portfolio. Until Southam itself was taken over by Conrad Black's Hollinger Inc. The newspaper was with Black's Hollinger Inc. until 2000 when it was sold to CanWest Global . After CanWest Global went bankrupt, Postmedia Network bought CanWest Global's newspaper division.
