Grammy Award for Best R&B Album

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grammy Award for Best R&B Album ( German "Grammy Award for the best R&B album") is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 1995 . The award goes to musicians or bands whose album is assigned to traditional R&B or contemporary R&B , with the category Best Contemporary R&B Album existing from 2003 to 2011 for the latter .

Background and story

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards) have been presented annually since 1959 for artistic achievement, technical competence and overall musical achievement in various categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), regardless of the number of sales of the work.

In 1995 , a prize was awarded for an R&B album for the first time; in previous years, only songs and their performances were awarded. In 2003, a new category was created with Best Contemporary R&B Album ("Best Contemporary R&B Album") and thus re-divided the old one. In 2011, however, the two categories were merged again after a restructuring. To receive the award, the album must contain at least 51 percent newly recorded vocals. Samplings , skits or similar recordings are only allowed to make up 49 percent of the album.

statistics

So far, only American artists have received awards. The award winners have so far included six male and eight female artists as well as two bands, and a collaboration between a singer and a group has also been recognized. With two awards each, the band TLC , singer Alicia Keys and John Legend received the most awards so far, with Legend receiving his award in 2011 together with the band The Roots . The most frequently nominated so far was Mary J. Blige , who was nominated five times for an award, but received it only once. Soul singer India.Arie was nominated four times and received the award only once. The artists Prince , Jill Scott and Ledisi have each received three nominations, but have not yet won any award.
