Robert Glasper (2013)

Robert Glasper (born April 5, 1978 in Houston , Texas ) is an American jazz pianist . According to laut.de , he cultivates “a unique symbiosis of jazz and hip-hop ”.

Live and act

Glasper was musically influenced by his mother, who was a gospel singer, but also led a band and performed with her in regional blues and jazz clubs. At the age of twelve he played the piano for the first time in church. He attended the prestigious Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before moving to New York to study at The New School University. As a student he played with Christian McBride , Kenny Garrett and Russell Malone . He then worked with Roy Hargrove , Carmen Lundy and Terence Blanchard ( Bounce , 2003). In 2004 he released his debut album Mood , which was followed a year later by the first album on the major Blue Note Records label , Canvas . His mother and second husband were murdered in 2004. The music got him over it, he said in an interview, he lived his grief on the piano. In 2007 his third album In My Element was released .

Glasper was also influenced by hip hop; therefore there was a collaboration with artists of this music genre, including Bilal , Mos Def , Common , Talib Kweli , Slum Village , Jay-Z , J Dilla and Erykah Badu . In addition to his jazz trio, he also appears together with Derrick Hodge , Chris Dave and Casey Benjamin under the name The Robert Glasper Experiment , where he experiments with the fusion of jazz and hip-hop. Glasper has also worked with Laïka Fatien , Jeremy Pelt , Marcus Strickland and Jaleel Shaw . Supported by Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder and other celebrities, he reinterpreted songs by Davis in 2016 (supported by samples from Miles Davis ).

John Fordham paid tribute to him in The Guardian as follows:

"As a jazz virtuoso who cleverly pretends to be, as a hip-hop artist who seldom gets loud, and as an improviser with the awareness of a classical pianist for weighing up every sound, Glasper has both the discipline and the ability to think freely. Plate-watching to keep up with the elder statesman of these virtues, Herbie Hancock . "
